ADVANTAGE:  ATHLETES

“I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”          -- Michael Jordan

In order to become the best, athletes must make huge sacrifices and "do whatever it takes." But understanding what it takes often gets clouded by a lack of understanding of what is important. Even very skilled athletes often leave a lot on the table by

  • Over-training physically

  • Under-training mentally

After learning from the best, struggling through these issues in high stakes situations, and developing my own understanding of the critical elements of elite performance, I have figured out how to help athletes understand what it really takes, & thus facilitate peak performance. Together we draw on five related skill families/mechanisms (mindfulness/attention training, motivation, resilience training, visualization, and energy management) that when linked steepen the learning curve and create more successful and fulfilled athletes. These skills are trainable and get better with practice.  But there's no magic bullet (I've searched)...like any athletic pursuit, it takes practice.

Sustained elite performance draws on the following characteristics:

  • Process-driven and razor-sharp focus

  • Calibrated intensity and resilience

  • Embracing challenge with realistic optimism

  • Alertness, curiosity, awareness, and calm in the midst of pressure

  • Creativity and out-of-the-box spontaneity when appropriate

  • Consistent performance at/near max skill level

Mindfulness training is the first critical mechanism.  I call it the "killer-app" because it catalyzes the other four and leverages their effectiveness.

Each sport and athlete is different and requires a unique approach. Please contact us to discuss a bespoke training program to understand what it takes for you and optimize performance.
